EXTERIOR

“Timeless elegance”, best sums up Pininfarina’s exquisite styling. The rakish side profile, matched with delicate wrap around chrome bumpers and fared in headlights, are beautifully set-off by the race inspired bullet style wing mirrors and ornate recessed door handles. It looks from every angle, like a true sports car.

Although subject to a comprehensive restoration by Colne Classics in 2003 (https://www.colneclassics.com/restoration), the car’s bodywork was subject to further restoration works in the summer of 2020. This included replacement of both front and rear valances, as well as remedial work to both sills and application of new stone guard all round. The results, as can be seen, are simply stunning, with the Rosso Corsa paintwork holding an incredible depth of shine and completely devoid of any dents or corrosion.

The chrome brightwork is all in excellent condition, as is the roof, which also boasts a very clear rear screen and which has recently been treated to a Fabsil Gold weather protectant treatment (one of the best mohair hood weather protectants available). The car also comes with a clip-on tonneau cover.

INTERIOR & EQUIPMENT

The cockpit of the Spider is typical of Alfa Romeos of the era and oozes a mixture of sporting Italian flair and purposeful ergonomics. The main instrument binnacles are heavily cowled, allowing for their easy reading, even in the strongest sunlight. Ancillary dials are both comprehensive and purposefully angled towards the driver. In addition, the gearstick, sprouting straight of the dash, falls to hand perfectly for quick gear changes. Touches of chrome here and there, dainty stalks and switch gear, as well as the magnificent and original deep dished wood rimmed steering wheel, provide for the finishing touches of elegance, that is pure Italian showmanship.

The sculpted and comfortable seats have been professionally retrimmed to factory specification and a brand new heater was also installed in 2020, so roof down motoring on crisp winter days, can also be enjoyed.

Carpets and door cards are both in great condition and all instruments and switchgear, operate as they should.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & SUSPENSION

The 2000cc all aluminium double overhead cam engine is a masterpiece, managing to be both torquey in the lower rev range and also keen to rev. It sounds gloriously rorty, breathing through the Pipercross performance air filter from Alfaholics, that sits in the recently refurbished original air filter box.

Mechanically, the car has been exceptionally well looked after, with no expense spared. In 2010, it underwent a full engine rebuild and has done less than 3000 miles since. The twin Weber 40 DCOE carburettors were professionally reconditioned and ultrasonically cleaned in 2018. In 2020, the car was given a full service at 98,922 miles and has also had an electronic fuel pump fitted, a well proven solution to overcoming starting issues, common to these cars, when not run for a while.

In 2017, all suspension springs were replaced and new Bilstein shock absorbers fitted all round, along with new front and rear trailing arm bushes and rebound straps.

The rear section of the prop shaft was replaced in 2019 and in 2020, the whole prop shaft was taken out for re-balancing and a new prop shaft centre bearing fitted.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TYRES

The car sits on beautifully refurbished 14 inch Factory Alfa Romeo sculptured cast alloy wheels, with matching Bridgestone B391 185/70 R14 tyres all round, with plenty of tread left.

The Spider was fitted with hydraulic 4-wheel disc brakes with dual safety circuits and a system that assured proper braking balance at all four wheels.

In 2018, the braking system was replaced in its entirety. This comprised new discs, callipers, twin master cylinders and brake lines throughout.

The car comes with its original jack and tyre brace.

UNDERSIDE

As part of the bodywork refurbishment in 2020, the existing underseal was removed and any areas of corrosion addressed. The underside was then treated to a comprehensive DINITROL automotive rust prevention and corrosion protection treatment. The car’s underside is now extremely well protected by the next generation of corrosion prevention treatments, essential for keeping corrosion prone 1970s Alfa Romeos, in the best of condition.

FIND OUT ABOUT THE DOCUMENTED HISTORY

DOCUMENTED HISTORY

There is a very well documented history file, dating back to the 1990s. It contains photographs from a previous restoration by Colne Classics (https://www.colneclassics.com) in 2003, as well as the most recent restoration in 2020. In addition, there are a significant number of invoices and receipts for restoration, maintenance and parts all the way up to 2020.

In May 2021, the car was subject to a comprehensive independent inspection carried out by Yale Engineers Ltd (https://www.classiccarinspector.co.uk/about.html), who commented in the report’s overview, that the car was “almost a museum piece”. A full copy of the 6 page report is included in the history file.

There is a large collection of past MOTs along with the current V5C. In addition, the file also contains an owners workshop manual and an original sales brochure for the 2000 Spider Veloce Series 2.
