EXTERIOR

As can be seen from the photos the Bronze Green paintwork is in lovely condition and the panel and door shut lines present as uniform all round.

As this is not a box fresh restoration, there is of course some light patina and the odd age related blemish.

The hardtop comes with Alpine roof lights and a rare Safari top for extra ventilation as well as opening side windows, making for a light and airy rear cabin and a much nicer environment for rear passengers, than a windowless hardtop.  In addition the split rear door opens  as one or with the just the top half opening in a  “stable door” style.

The vehicle is fitted with a galvanised front bumper, two heavy duty front mounted towing eyes, a manually operated reversing light and rear tow bar.

The spare wheel is currently mounted on bonnet with the correctly specified mounting carrier kit.

All light clusters operate as they should and lenses are clear and free of any cracks.

INTERIOR & EQUIPMENT

In the Series 3, the instrument cluster, which was previously centrally located, was moved to the driver's side. The two Smiths central dials immediately in front of the driver house the speedo in one and the water temperature and petrol gauges in the other along with a charge light.  In addition, the vehicle is fitted with additional gauges measuring battery condition, amps and oil pressure.

The front seats are in a 3 seat bench configuration with forwards and backwards adjustability.  The seat has been custom made and attractively trimmed in tan leather. The seat is in excellent condition with no rips or tears, with lap seatbelts fitted.

In the rear cabin there are 2 sets of custom made fold up bench seats providing additional seating for 4, all in the same tan leather as the front  bench seat. In addition, the rear houses twin 20 litre Jerry cans mounted in a secure frame. Finally, the rear cabin has been nicely finished with a varnished wood floorboarding.

Finally, the vehicle comes with a set of rubber mats for the driver and passenger footwells.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & SUSPENSION

The engine is fitted with Land Rovers long serving 2.25 litre petrol engine, in this case it is the earlier period correct 3 bearing version (the later 5 bearing engine was not available until 1980) easily distinguished by the engine block being finished in Duck Egg blue. The engine is fitted with the popular Weber carburettor.

Whilst little maintenance history exists from its time in South Africa, it was last serviced in February 2025 at 94,170 kms, where it also had new ball joints and steering damper fitted.

Since being in the UK, it has benefited from having a new steering box fitted, along with an electric fuel pump, washer pump and a new heavy duty battery.

Day to day driving in a Series Land Rover is done in rear wheel drive via a four speed all synchromesh transmission. 4wd drive is selected with either the yellow or red knobs depending on whether high or low ratio is required.

The vehicle is also fitted with Mayflower Automotive Products (“MAP”) freewheeling front hubs, In this configuration, the front swivels, differential, propeller shaft and output shaft remain stationary. Only the road wheels rotate on their bearings. This provides for greater fuel efficiency.  In driving all gears select as they should and 4 wheel drive engages when selected and both high and low ratios also operate as they should.

Suspension is via leaf springs and shocks all round and all in good working order.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TYRES

The car sits on OEM specification 16” refurbished painted steel wheels, with matching BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres in 235/85/R16, all with significant tread left.  The Spare is the same as the driven wheels and is unused.

Brakes are drums all round and operate as they should.

UNDERSIDE

The chassis has benefited from protection with an anti-corrosive coating as part of its previous restoration and shows no obvious signs of corrosion. The bulk head and both front foot wells also presents in excellent condition.

As part of the pre-sales the underside and mechanical componentry underneath the car was treated to a comprehensive preservation treatment.  This included removing any minor surface corrosion from suspension and running gear components and then treating them with rust converter.  Buzzweld’s excellent Zero Prep was used as a long lasting anti corrosion coating, which unlike some other underside coatings, provides a hard dry finish that can easily be jet washed clean, as opposed to a non-dry finish that causes dirt and salt to stick to the coated surfaces.

Dinitrol 4010 high temperature clear wax, was then used on engine and gearbox casings, to add protection to those surfaces.

In addition, the internal box sections of the chassis were cavity injected with Dinitrol ML cavity wax.

As such the vehicle is now very well protected from the elements going forwards.
