VEHICLE OVERVIEW

Designed by Kazumasu Takagi, this is the 3rd generation of the popular “Z” cars, begun with the 240Z. The Z31 300ZX featured improved aerodynamics and increased power when compared to the 280ZX. The new, streamlined body had a drag coefficient of 0.30 and the car was powered by Japan’s first mass-produced V6 engine instead of an inline 6 that was typically used.

This car is a later “phase 2” version of the Z31, referred to as the “Kouki”. It features flared wheel arches, colour coded plastic trim including side skirts, more aerodynamic bumpers, rear lights running the entire width of the car and redesigned headlights, all of which contributed to a smoother and wider look, over the earlier “phase 1” car .

The car has benefitted from a recent and sympathetic cosmetic renovation, which included a “windows out” respray, professionally refurbished wheels and new tyres to all driven wheels. In addition, as part of the mechanical recommissioning, the car was given a full service and the cam belt and water pump changed.

For those looking for a lovely example of a usable classic Japanese sportscar, then with its white colour coded paintwork, side skirts, removable targa-tops, pop-up headlights and pinstripe velour interior, few cars come more 80s than this!

EXTERIOR

As part of the recent renovation, all windows were removed and any areas of corrosion treated. The car was then given a full respray in its original Super White. All inner wheel arches have been stripped of old underseal and re-coated with Gravitex under body protectant, then given a painted top coat. As can be seen from the photos, the paintwork is in lovely condition overall, but we would not describe it as concours.

INTERIOR & EQUIPMENT

The two tone pinstripe blue and grey velour seats, are all in excellent condition, with no stains, holes or tears and the original carpets are also in great condition. There are no rips or cracks in the vinyl trim fittings, which are also fade free and a new headlining has also been fitted. The targa-tops are also in excellent condition and lift in and out as they’re supposed to and can be stowed in their original targa-top covers, when not fitted.

All electrics and gauges work as they should, including heater controls, cruise control, power windows and original Nissan radio/cassette player

The car comes with its original tool kit.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & SUSPENSION

The 3.0 V6 engine is smooth and powerful with a purposeful, but not intrusive exhaust note from the rare standard exhaust.

As part of the mechanical re-commissioning in early 2021, the car was given a full service, which included oil and filter change, new spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm and air filter. In addition, the cam belt and water pump were also changed.

The 4 speed automatics shifts as it should, with kick-down engaging promptly when asked for. This car is also fitted with an electric overdrive that drops the revs in the highest gear when activated, to allow for more relaxed cruising.

The suspension feels tight and is free from any knocks or bumps and the car steers and tracks without any vagueness.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TYRES

The car sits on factory OEM 15 x 7 inch alloys wheels, which were professionally refurbished as part of the pre-sale preparation and brand new Sumitomo BC 100 tyres in the correct 215/60 R15 size, have been fitted to all driven wheels.

The brakes which are servo assisted discs all round are powerful and operate as they should.

DOCUMENTED HISTORY

The car’s history extends only to the V5C and the current MOT certificate, which expires 20th January 2022. A recent Total Car Check lists all the MOTs the car has had since 2006 and is included in the documented history.

Please note, that the Total Car Check also lists the car as a Category D insurance loss (uneconomical to repair), dated 31st December 2000.
