VEHICLE OVERVIEW

As part of a “Fast Ford” collection, we are delighted to offer this truly exceptional and cherished example of Ford’s fast hatch 80’s icon.

With just 28,000 miles from new (backed up by extensive service and MOT history), this is a remarkable “survivor car”, having not been the subject of a restoration, but rather, preserved in stunning original condition. This little XR2 is a true testament to the fastidious care and attention it has received, throughout its lifetime.

Having covered only 4,500 miles since 2009, the car was given a thorough recommissioning in 2021, including a full service, new front discs and pads, rear brake cylinders, replacement of front suspension bushes and tie-rods a new thermostat and oil sump pan. At that time the cambelt and water pump were replaced. Finally, all springs and shocks have also been recently replaced with OEM items.

The car is now back to it its very best and with its potent free-revving engine, smooth five speed gearbox, joyful handling and distinctive exhaust note, it’s a true joy to drive and a proper fast Ford.

So, if you’re looking for a showroom condition, original and unmolested example of one of Ford’s great everyday heroes from the 80s, then this is it.

EXTERIOR

The car has been preserved in stunning unmodified condition. The paintwork is finished in Ford Radiant Red, (Code P9) and as can be seen from the photos, has a brilliant deep shine with a uniform finish. All factory panels are perfectly straight with linear gaps and with the front wings, still carrying the original factory welds and seam sealer. There are of course very minor markings in the paint (to be expected given the car’s unrestored nature), but barely noticeable. The original single orange coach lines running down the sides of the car, are also in excellent unbroken condition and the rear XR2 decal on the boot lid, is also present. The body and bumper mouldings that give the Mk 2 XR2 its distinctive “chunky” looks, are in superb original, unmarked and non-faded condition and the correct satin black window surrounds, present as they should do. Both wing mirrors are unmarked and also non-faded.

All glass is in superb all round condition, with just minimal markings commensurate with a vehicle of its age. All lights units are original Ford items and in excellent condition, including the all-important front spots.

INTERIOR & EQUIPMENT

The interior is in spotless original condition and exactly as Ford intended. The Monaco trim in the Bluestone colour scheme, (Code L4), is beautifully clean and the common vulnerable areas for wear such as the seat bases and bolsters are excellent.

The carpets are as new and are protected by genuine Ford rubber mats, front and back.

All switchgear is functional and intact and the soft finish dashboard is perfect. The header mounted digital clock retains the correct grey LCD display and the original Ford stereo radio/cassette (Model ESRT 32 PS) remains in place and functional. A new OEM spec aerial, has been previously fitted.

The hugely difficult to source original trimmed parcel shelf is intact, straight and complete with the correct rubber hangers.

The car also comes with the optional tilt glass sunroof, which operates as it should.

Finally, the boot contains the correct fitment two part removable floor covers, an unmarked “Pepper Pot” alloy with a matching unused tyre to the driven wheels, the original underfloor stowage bin and jack.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & SUSPENSION

The time proven transverse mounted 1597cc OHC engine with twin-venturi carburettor, develops a lively 96BHP at 5750rpm and 97.3 ft/lbs of torque at 4000rpm. In such a lightweight and nimble car, the sense of fun and that unmistakable exhaust note make this car truly addictive! A top speed of 109mph and 0-60 in just 9.3 seconds is eagerly achieved.

Having travelled just 4500 miles since 2009, the car was subject to a comprehensive recommissioning in late 2021. This included a full service, carburettor clean and new thermostat fitted, the engine is quiet and smooth.  The recommissioning also included a cam belt and water pump replacement, an oil sump pan replacement and the service history records a new clutch was fitted at 14,000 miles.

The five speed synchromesh gearbox with remote shift is light and a joy to use and the gearbox oil level was checked, as part of the recent full service.

In addition, all the springs and dampers have been replaced with OEM items. New tie-rods and a new set of front suspension bushes were also fitted, as part of the 2021 recommissioning.

The engine bay is beautifully clean and unspoilt with factory plates and stickers.

Finally, there is a spare OEM spec complete exhaust system from behind the downpipes to rear end pipe. Depending on the price agreed, this may be included with the sale of the car.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TYRES

The car sits on the optional extra 13” x 6” “Pepper Pot” alloy wheels, fitted with barely used Yokohama A539 185/60 R13 tyres. All wheels are in excellent condition and clearly show the original Ford logo and factory number stampings.

The car was originally fitted with the 13” x 6” steel wheels and 2 piece plastic trim pieces in silver. We do have a set of these wheels and trim in near new condition (which are extremely rare to find now), as well as a set of the OEM spec Pirelli P600 tyres. Depending on price agreed, these may come with the car.

The dual line servo assisted brakes with ventilated 9.4” front discs and 7.0” rear drums bring the car to a steady, straight and assured stop, having benefitted from new front discs and pads and replacement rear wheel cylinders, as part of the 2021 recommissioning.

DOCUMENTED HISTORY

The car comes with a comprehensive history file.  This includes the registration document, service and parts invoices (including the recommissioning works in 2021), current and old MOTs and a selection of tax discs. In addition, there are a selection of photos from its previous ownership.

The history folder also includes the original A5 dealer folder, that contains all original handbooks, guides and radio/cassette player manual, as well as the service book containing 10 stamped entries, the first 5 being from the original supplier dealer Benz of Halesowen, in the West Midlands.

A Total Vehicle Check report is also included. This was carried out in May 2023, this confirms the vehicle is HPI clear, has not been written off and outlines details of all MOTs since 2009.

Finally, the car comes with a set of 2 original keys, as well 2 additional spare copies.
