A rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally well-presented and highly original 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Series 4 (“S4”), finished in elegant Bianca Freddo with a tan Alcantara and vinyl interior.
Built from 1991 to 1993 the S4 was the final evolution of Alfa Romeo’s much-loved classic roadster that could trace its roots back to 1966 with the S1 “Duetto”. The S4 combines timeless Pininfarina styling with welcome modern usability, including power steering and Bosch Motronic fuel injection.
Unlike many UK-market cars, this is a genuine factory-built LHD example, retaining the engineering integrity, driving position and originality intended by Alfa Romeo. UK RHD S4s were all converted in the UK from LHD, making factory-original cars such as this increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
Having covered just 91.3K kms (56.7K miles), the car has had only 3 owners from new (one enthusiast owner returning to ownership for a second time) and benefits from an extensive maintenance and service record as well as past MOT certificates (supporting actual mileage). The most recent service was completed in March 2026. Most recent works include, new front callipers and pads, replacement clutch slave cylinder, power steering belt, cam cover gasket and differential pinion seal and lower gasket, all carried out in May 2026.
This car has been carefully improved with sympathetic upgrades including:
Desirable factory and period features include:
A multiple show attendee and Alfa Romeo Owners' Club Concours Award winner, this car is a testament to long-term enthusiast ownership and meticulous care. It has also been featured in AutoItalia magazine (issue 186), as part of a feature on three generations of Alfa Spiders.
The S4 Spider represents the final evolution of Alfa Romeo's classic Pininfarina-designed roadster, combining timeless styling, open-air motoring and engaging twin-cam performance. Finding a low-mileage, factory-original LHD example with this provenance, specification and history is becoming increasingly difficult.
Ready to enjoy immediately, with a current MOT valid until March 2027.
Offered with a comprehensive history, this outstanding S4 Spider is equally at home on touring holidays, concours lawns or in a discerning collection.
Early viewing is strongly recommended.
Presented in gleaming Bianca Freddo (Cold White), this S4 perfectly showcases the subtle yet effective styling revisions introduced by Pininfarina. Colour-coded bumpers and sill covers, wraparound rear lights, and a delicate kick-up to the boot lid and rear wings give the S4 a cleaner, sleeker and more contemporary look than the earlier S3, while still preserving the unmistakable character of Alfa Romeo’s classic Spider.
The paintwork presents in excellent overall condition, with no signs of corrosion evident anywhere. As you would expect from an unrestored car of this age, there are only the occasional small touch-ins for minor stone chips and light door-edge marks. The limited brightwork, including the door handles, badging, windscreen surround and headlamp surrounds, is also in excellent order.
The car’s original soft top is in excellent overall condition with the plastic rear clear, split and crack free and devoid of any yellowing. As part of the car’s pre-sales preparation it was also treated to a Fabsil Gold re-waterproofing.
The car also comes with its factory hard top, complete with a glass rear window and integrated electric demister, adding welcome practicality and year-round usability to this charming open-top Alfa.
The tan Alcantara and vinyl interior provides a wonderfully elegant contrast to the Bianca Freddo exterior. The seats present in excellent condition, showing little to no visible wear, while the carpets are similarly well kept, with only the lightest signs of use beginning to appear on the driver’s side entry area. The car also comes with two sets of high-quality Alfa Romeo-branded floor mats, one in taupe and one in black.
The steering wheel has been upgraded to a MOMO wood-and-leather item, complemented by a matching MOMO wooden gear knob. The original leather steering wheel has been retained and will accompany the car. As a factory-built left-hand-drive example, it also benefits from the larger pedal box absent from right-hand-drive conversions, some of which also lost the glovebox depending on the conversion company used. In addition, as a LHD car the levers for the boot and petrol cap release are on the actual driver’s side.
A Sony radio/CD player with integrated USB connectivity has been fitted, adding discreet everyday usability. The dashboard layout is clear and easy to read, with a cowled binnacle that helps visibility when driving with the roof down. The speedometer and rev counter flank the ancillary gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, water temperature and voltmeter, together with the usual warning lights. Heater controls sit adjacent to the gear lever, while switches for the electric windows, front and rear fog lights and electric door mirrors are neatly arranged in a dedicated panel at the front of the transmission tunnel.
Finally, the car comes with its original tool kit, all the correct fixings for the hard top, a spare set of wheel bolts and a wind deflector that fits behind the seats. This makes for a considerable difference on reducing wind noise on those longer drives.
Please note that although the speedo reads in miles per hour, it was calibrated to record distance in kilometres.
The car is powered by Alfa Romeo’s tried-and-tested 2.0-litre twin-cam Nord engine. Chain-driven rather than belt-driven, it avoids the need for routine cambelt changes and, in Series 4 form, benefits from variable valve timing together with Bosch Motronic fuel injection and ignition, improving both starting and day-to-day running over the earlier carburettor cars. This example has also been fitted with an upgraded ECU chip from Squadra Tuning, enhancing mid-range response and fuel efficiency, while the original ECU has been retained should a future owner wish to refit it. A bespoke full stainless-steel exhaust system from the downpipes back complements the twin-cam beautifully, delivering a rich and characterful soundtrack without excessive volume or motorway drone, while offering far greater longevity than the original mild-steel system.
The five-speed gearbox is well suited to the car, with thoughtfully chosen ratios that make for relaxed and enjoyable driveability. The signature Alfa gear lever, emerging from the centre of the dash, falls naturally to hand from the steering wheel and remains one of the Spider’s most distinctive features. The clutch slave cylinder has recently been replaced, and everything functions exactly as it should.
Invoice records show that the prop shaft bearings and universal joints were replaced with heavy-duty items at 32,000 miles. They also confirm the fitment of upgraded Koni dampers and uprated Code Red rear springs, giving the car a subtly improved stance and composure without detracting from its character.
The car has been regularly serviced throughout its life, supported by a stamped service book and invoice records documenting 20 oil changes to date. The gearbox oil was last changed at 54,400 miles, while the most recent differential oil change was carried out in May 2026 at 56,799 miles, further underlining the level of care this S4 has received.
The car sits on its original 15 inch “Pepperpot” alloy wheels with matching Michelin Energy Saver 195/60 R15 tyres all round, with plenty of tread left.
The S4 was fitted with hydraulic 4-wheel disc brakes with dual safety circuits and a system that assured proper braking balance at all four wheels.
In May 2026, both front callipers and pads were replaced.
The car comes with its original jack and tyre brace.
As part of the pre-sale preparation, the underside was treated to a sympathetic ice-blast cleaning process. This was carried out to remove dirt, oil residue and a layer of secondary underseal that had been applied at some point in the past. While the process successfully removed the majority of this later coating, some residue was deliberately left in place where further cleaning risked disturbing the original factory-applied under seal. Once completed, it revealed the factory undercoating to be in excellent condition throughout both the underside and inner wheel arches. The floor pans, inner arches, sills and jacking points all appear free from corrosion and the car shows no signs of having required welding.
Following cleaning, the engine, gearbox and differential casings were recoated with a high-temperature-resistant clear wax to preserve them going forward. The suspension, braking components and brackets beneath the car were also treated as required with rust converter and then protected with a further application of clear wax.
As a result, the underside is now exceptionally clean, well-presented and protected with modern corrosion-prevention treatments — an important consideration in preserving any classic Alfa Romeo properly.
The car comes with its current V5C and a clear HPI report from Total Car Check, dated 4 June 2026.
The report does note an apparent mileage discrepancy between 2017 and 2018. This was the result of an MOT input error, where the odometer reading in kilometres was incorrectly recorded as miles — a relatively common mistake on cars that display distance in kilometres rather than miles.
A substantial file of service and maintenance invoices, together with a stamped service book covering the car’s early life and MOT certificates dating back to 2005, supports the current recorded mileage of 91,377 kilometres (56,799 miles). Just as importantly, this history reflects the consistent care and attention the car has received throughout its life, no doubt contributing to its Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club concours success.
The car was also featured in AutoItalia magazine (Issue 186), which included a six-page review covering all three generations of Alfa Spider.
Also included is the original dealer book pack, comprising the owner’s manual, Sony head unit operating booklet and the service booklet, which contains six stamps. The car is further accompanied by detailed hard-top fitting instructions and three sets of keys.
