VEHICLE OVERVIEW

Many have tried to challenge the Land Rover Defender’s reputation as the “best four-by-four by far”, but few have come close. Its unrivalled blend of go-anywhere capability, rugged durability and timeless character has made it an enduring icon. By the time the Defender name was introduced in 1990, Land Rover had already spent more than four decades perfecting the formula.

First registered in September 2011, this Land Rover Defender 90 XS 2.4 TDCi is a smart, range-topping example of the short-wheelbase Defender, finished in desirable Orkney Grey Metallic and specified as a four-seat Station Wagon. With just one former keeper and 84,000 miles from new, it benefits from a full service history, most recently serviced in January 2026.

Under the bonnet is the dependable 2.4-litre four-cylinder TDCi diesel engine, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Permanent four-wheel drive, high and low range gearing and a locking differential ensure it remains every bit as capable off-road, as its legendary reputation suggests.

As an XS model, it is well equipped from the factory, featuring power steering, electric front windows, heated front seats, heated front and rear screens, rear wash/wipe, and air conditioning. In Station Wagon form, it also offers two full-size, forward-facing fold-away rear seats with inertia-reel seat belts, along with privacy glass to the slide opening rear side windows and distinctive Alpine roof lights.

With relatively low mileage, supported by comprehensive service history and MOT records, this Defender presents in very good overall condition, both inside and out. It has also recently benefited from a comprehensive underbody preservation treatment as part of its pre-sale preparation.

Combining everyday usability with genuine all-terrain ability, this Defender 90 would make an ideal companion for daily use, weekend adventures, or practical workhorse duties.

EXTERIOR

Finished in Orkney Grey Metallic, this Defender is presented in a subtle yet highly sought-after colour, which particularly complements the Station Wagon body style and its additional glazing.

The paintwork is in very good overall condition for a 15-year-old Land Rover, with only the occasional age-related blemish, as to be expected.

All glass is tinted and in excellent condition, including the privacy glass in the rear compartment to the side slide opening rear windows and the distinctive Alpine roof lights.

Externally, the vehicle is fitted with a tow bar and electrics, side steps, rear step and a set of Land Rover rear mudflaps. The rear door is equipped with a heated rear window, along with a wash/wipe function. All lights are in good order, free from cracks or chips, and operate exactly as they should.

INTERIOR & EQUIPMENT

As the “top of the range” XS model, the interior is part leather and cloth in black and dark grey, with matching charcoal carpets in the front and rear compartments.

As a four seater station wagon, it makes for versatile seating configurations, with two front seats and two full size front facing fold away seats in the compartment. All seats are fitted with inertia reel seat belts.

The seating is all in very good condition, with the front seats showing just a little wear as compared to the rear seats (which appear very lightly used). The carpets, in both the front  and rear compartments are also in very good condition all round.

As an XS specification model, the car comes standard with power steering, electric front windows, heated front seats, heated front and rear windscreens, air conditioning and rear screen wash/wiper. It comes with its original Land Rover Radio/Cd player and has had an after-market Parrot hands free phone kit system fitted.

All lights, switches, controls and air conditioning operate as they should.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & SUSPENSION

The vehicle is fitted with the Ford-derived 2.4-litre four-cylinder TDCi engine, also known as the Puma engine. Introduced in 2007 as the successor to the outgoing Td5, it produced the same peak power of 122 bhp, but with approximately 20% more torque and cleaner emissions. Paired with the six-speed manual gearbox introduced at the same time, it benefits from an additional ratio and slightly more refined cruising thanks to a higher-geared transfer box, when compared with the earlier Td5 model.

Unlike the later 2.2 TDCi engine fitted to Defenders from 2012 onwards, the 2.4 TDCi was not equipped with a DPF, which can prove problematic on vehicles frequently used for short journeys.

The vehicle features permanent four-wheel drive, along with high and low range gearing and a locking differential. Together, these provide a highly versatile set of drive configurations designed to cope with virtually any situation the vehicle is likely to encounter, whether on or off road.

With just over 84,000 miles from new, the engine runs beautifully, with no visible smoke either on start-up or when warm.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TYRES

The car sits on factory 16” Boost alloy wheels, with matching 235/85 R16 Continental Cross Contact AT tyres, all with significant tread left.  The spare is identical to the driven wheels and is unused.

Brakes are discs are fitted all round and operate as they should.

The car comes with its original jack and wheel brace, as well its locking wheel nut socket.

UNDERSIDE

As part of the pre-sales preparation, the entire underside was subject to Ice Blast cleaning and inspected.

The chassis was found to be in good overall condition, but with areas of surface corrosion in a few places and the bulk head was corrosion free.

Following the Ice Blast cleaning any areas of surface corrosion on the chassis or mechanical components, were then treated with a rust converter.

The internal box sections of the chassis were then cavity waxed with Dinitrol ML Cavity wax and the chassis coated with Dinitrol 4941 underbody anti- corrosion wax. Engine and gearbox casings, suspension, steering components, hand brake drum and prop shafts were coated with Dinitrol 4010 clear wax.

Both coatings leave a candle wax type finish which provides a level of self-healing, if chipped.

As such, the underside preservation treatment provides the car with a comprehensive and exceptionally durable, jet wash proof corrosion protection, even if used all year round or off road, as most Land Rovers find themselves from time to time.
